A small air conditioner has a small cooling effect; a larger air conditioner has a stronger cooling performance but a higher cost and higher energy consumption. So what exactly is the air conditioner capacity that I need for my room size? Don't choose it blindly; a comparison chart here can help you solve the problem quickly.
I. What's HP (Horsepower)?
HP is the unit of air conditioner power; 1 HP is approximately equal to 2500 W of cooling capacity. Common air conditioner capacities include 1 HP, 1.5 HP, 2 HP, 3 HP, etc. The larger the capacities, the stronger the air conditioner's cooling/heating capacity.
However, choosing an air conditioner is not a matter of “the bigger the better”. Instead, it should be judged comprehensively based on factors such as room size, floor height, orientation, and usage function.
II. Standard horsepower reference table
Room size | Suggested horsepower | scenarios |
10-15㎡ | 1 HP | Small bedroom, study room |
15-20㎡ | 1.5 HP | Ordinary bedroom, children's room |
20-30㎡ | 2 HP | Master bedroom, large study room, small living room |
30-40㎡ | 2.5 HP | Living room, conference room |
40-50㎡ | 3 HP | Large living room, office |
50-70㎡ | 5 HP | Open space, restaurant, commercial place |
70㎡ and above | 6-7 HP or choose VRF/VRV system | Large conference room, restaurant, exhibition hall, etc. |
The above is a reference for a normal home environment with a 2.6 m floor height and good insulation. If the floor height is high, there is direct sunlight, there is a large flow of people, or there are many devices, it is recommended to appropriately increase the number of units or choose a multi-split/duct unit solution.
III. Selection tips
- Select based on room type and its usage: Silent and energy-saving air conditioners are priorly considered for bedrooms; airflow distance and cooling coverage are concerns for living rooms.
- Select based on the orientation: For the room that faces the west or is located at the top of the building, it is suggested to choose the air conditioners plus 0.5 hp.
- Select with a margin: Reserve 10%-20% cooling capacity to withstand the extreme hot weather.
